You’re on CCTV the visitor enters a room with several hidden IP cameras and one central video surveillance monitor placed on a desk. On several sticky notes placed on the walls and the floor, the visitor can read quotes on the subject of privacy, CCTV, security, safety and the rise of the ‘politics of fear’. The video monitor shows several (delayed) video streams of the cameras capturing the image of the visitor. Because of this delay, the visitor can watch himself on the monitor walking around the room, while he was reading these quotes.

Video for 'Wij Bouwen de Stad' (Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival 2010)

I made some videos for the performance ‘Wij Bouwen de Stad’ by Domestica Rotterdam, which will have it’s premiere this weekend on September 5th, during the Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival 2010. Here, i experimented with the idea of showing simultaneously four different ’tempi’ of one take of footage. Time appears in a stretched or compressed manner, creating a sort of ’temporal disorientation'.

Time Sketch #2 is exhibited:

november 30 - december 4 2007: Booth of Existentie on Lineart Art Fair, Flanders Expo, Ghent (BE)

february 15th - february 19th 2008: Exhibition ‘Narratives in Space // Spatial Narrations’ at ACEC site, Ghent (BE)

Documentation

Scenes From My Backyard (2006)

Scenes From my Backyard is a 4-channel video installation in cooperation with Alexander de Vree and Mariska Hogendoorn. It is a ‘panoramic tableau vivant’ in which moving panoramic images are extended over 4 adjacent projection-screens. In a 15 minutes long time lapse sequence, the spectator is taken along different ’everyday scenes’ of a family in their backyard.

In this project, an estranged atmosphere is created out of everyday situations, by creating artificial camera-movements and playing the material back and forth at differents speeds during editing. The extremely wideangle images for this projects are shot at regular intervals of 1-2 seconds through a special 360-degrees panoramic lens. (This same technique is being used before in 24H Panorama)

24H Panorama (2006)

24H Panorama (4 min. / SD Video / Sound) is a short animated film of panoramic still images. In this film, time and space seem to exist independently in a sequence of tranquil landscapes. It is the first project in what will become a series of short films that deal with manipulated perception of time and space.

The extremely wideangle images for this projects are shot at regular intervals of 1-2 seconds through a special 360-degrees panoramic lens. All camera-movement is artificial, and digitally added during editing, independent of speed and direction of the material itself, creating an ‘illusionary flow of time and movement’. In the case of this project, the result is a somewhat rough collection of experiments. This project functions more or less as a pilot for further research.

Film/Space

Film/Space

Film/Space is a monumental multi-channel video installation without sound. It consists of 24 projection-screens, placed in a precise spatial arrangement. The visitor walks around in a filmic landscape of continuously changing projected forms in perfect linear perspective. One’s ability to perceive space is constantly put to the test; the visitor is encouraged to view the installation from different perspectives and to see the projected images in relation to the physical space surrounding the installation.

Light Modulator (2002)

Light Modulator is a 16mm film-installation. A film-loop is projected on a precisely cut-out projection screen, creating a ’trompe-l’oeil-like’ effect. The material for this project consists of chemically and digitally treated found footage. This project functioned as a sketch for the Film/Space project. Flashes of faces with different expressions randomly appear on three monitors, that immediately begin to degenerate into “smears” of color. Because images appear unexpected, the visitor is almost always ’too late’, forcing him to ‘mentally reconstruct’ these blurry images into facial expressions.

This project is exhibited:

may 13-16 1999, May Festival, Royal Conservatory, The Hague (NL)

Documentation
