From 2005 until 2014, I was a core member of theatre group Cowboy bij Nacht in Utrecht.

Over the course of almost ten years, we made several theatre performances and participative performance installations, which were shown on national theatre festivals like Oerol, Over ’t IJ Festival, Spring Performing Arts Festival and Karavaan Festival. We also made a several nationwide theatre tours.

Pecking the red dot

a theatrical lecture

To celebrate the 65th anniversary of Behaviour and the 40th anniversary of Niko Tinbergen’s Nobel Prize, Dutch theatre company Cowboy bij Nacht and behavioural biologist Carel ten Cate will team up to deliver a special theatrical lecture about the life and work of Niko Tinbergen (1907 - 1988).

Inspired by Tinbergen’s work with herring gulls and his classic experiments on supernormal stimuli, this lecture will provide a brief account of Tinbergen’s experiments on the begging responses of Herring gull chicks, illustrated with a short movie and pictures of Tinbergen’s old notes. Tinbergen’s original data on the famous experiment on the colour of the spot on the lower mandible differ from the well-known textbook figure showing the strongest response to a red spot.

Tesla Theatre is a short musical theatre performance about inventor and eccentric genius Nikola Tesla. In this performance for actor and a musical tesla coil, we share our fascination with wayward inventor, physicist and futurist Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943). Although he was often regarded as a mad genius in his own times, nowadays Tesla is seen as one of the biggest inventors of all times in the fields of electricity and magnetism. In this performance his miracles and radical ideas regarding a global network of unlimited wireless energy come to live.

De meeuwen van Tinbergen

De meeuwen van Tinbergen was een interdisciplinair kunstproject over supernormale prikkels en het leven en gedachtegoed van Niko Tinbergen (1907 – 1988), dat plaatsvond van 2010 - 2013. Het project vormde een eerbetoon aan deze Nederlandse gedragsbioloog, vogelaar, schrijver, tekenaar, filmer en Nobelprijswinnaar en bestond uit een proloog in 2011 en deze theatervoorstelling, tentoonstelling en excursie in 2012. Daarnaast werden in het academische jaar 2012 - 2013 een reeks theatrale lezingen georganiseerd rondom supernormale prikkels en menselijk gedrag op Nederlandse Universiteiten. De meeuwen van Tinbergen werd daarmee een interdisciplinair project op het kruispunt van kunst, natuur en wetenschap.

In samenwerking met Huis en Festival a/d Werf produceert Cowboy bij Nacht Ik dacht dat ik mijn naam hoorde. Deze voorstelling is exclusief voor het Festival a/d Werf 2009 gemaakt.

Ik dacht dat ik mijn naam hoorde gaat over dat wat zij zeker weet, terwijl hij daar toch anders over denkt. Over wat hij weet en zij denkt te weten. Over haar twijfels over iets dat hij evident vindt. Over dat wat zij als zonneklaar ziet, terwijl hij het gewoon had verzonnen. Over zijn echte leven dat zij ervaart als een leugen.

'Ruis ik slecht verstaan' & 'Bomans hoort u mij' (2008)

Ruis ik slecht verstaan and Bomans hoort u mij are two new theatre shows from Cowboy Bij Nacht and het NUT, a theatrical remake of the 1971 dutch radioshow ‘Alleen op een Eiland’. For both performances (playing simultaneously, and connected through a live radio connection) i composed music and took care of the design of the soundsystem.

Muisman Opnemen (2008)

Muisman Opnemen is the newest performance of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which I again composed the soundtrack. Muisman Opnemen is based on the novel ‘The Overcoat’ by Nikolaj Gogol (1809 - 1852) and is about Muisman, a civil servant with a futile function. He nevertheless loves his job and everyday, he arrives happy at the office. One day, he meets the impulsive ‘girl upstairs’. She pursues him to buy a new overcoat. This overcoat will forever change his life.

Maandag of Dinsdag (2007)

Maandag of Dinsdag is a new play of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which i composed music and (partly) did light- and stagedesign. It is inspired by ‘The Hours’ (2002), the oscar-winning movie directed by Stephen Daldry. Maandag of Dinsdag is a portrait of Gina, Laura and Clarissa, who all ended up in an emotional vacuum. As a result, their luck becomes nothing more than a façade. Maandag of Dinsdag shows the day on which this façade will be demolished.

Atkritka (2006)

Atkritka is a theatrical performance by Cowboy Bij Nacht. It is based on the documentary film Checkpoint of Yoav Shamir, concerning the social intercourse between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian citizens at checkpoints around the Palestinian areas. For this play, I composed a multichannel soundtrack.

In Atkritka, the tensed situation around the checkpoints is stripped of almost all visual context in six succesive scenes. As a contrast, I tried to ‘fill in’ this stripped context with a ‘hyperrealistic’ soundscape. Sounds were treated as objects; several small speakers on the stage played back concrete sounds of birds, insects, cars, etc., within a surrounding soundscape of 4 bigger speakers around the stage, each scene resembling a different desolate atmosphere.

Brel 2 (2005)

Brel 2 is a musical theatre play of Toneelgroep Oostpool, directed by Rob Ligthert. It is a follow-up of the very successful Brel, both about the life and music of the Belgian chansonier Jacques Brel (played by Jeroen Willems). I did video-editing for the 30 minutes opening scene (in cooperation with / directed by stagedesigner Matt Vermeulen)

Een Samenzwering Der Idioten (2003)

Een Samenzwering Der Idioten is a play by De Theatercompagnie, directed by Theu Boermans. It is about the life of Ignatius Riley, the protagonist of A Confederacy of Dunces, a posthumously published novel by John Kennedy Toole (Kennedy Toole himself committed suicide. He never found a publisher for his manuscripts). I edited several videos for this play and gave some advice about video-projection.
