Een interactieve luisterbeleving, gebaseerd op gesprekken met kunstenaars en experts over de menselijke omgang met cultuurlandschap in verleden, heden en toekomst.

Tegen de achtergrond van soundscapes, opgenomen in diverse stiltegebieden binnen het Groene Hart, geven zij verschillende genuanceerde perspectieven op de uitdagingen die er momenteel spelen binnen het Nederlandse landschap in het algemeen, en het oercultuurlandschap van Het Groene Hart in het bijzonder.

Shell Shock

Commissioned Sound Installation

As part of the Shell Shock programme at Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam, I created a commissioned interactive sound installation. Visitors can listen to stories of refugees by picking up old rotary telephones. These stories were recorded and provided by the BMP Foundation as part of the European refugees oral history project Specially Unknown.

Coinciding with the exhibition A Tale of Hidden Histories, Shell Shock provides a forum to the cinematic representation of violent conflicts and traumatic memories. It not only includes films but also socially engaged specials featuring talks, Q&As and performances. The programme focuses on such themes as memories and narrativity (Hannah Arendt), psychiatry (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) and the tales of Syrian refugees (storytelling).

From 2005 until 2014, I was a core member of theatre group Cowboy bij Nacht in Utrecht.

Over the course of almost ten years, we made several theatre performances and participative performance installations, which were shown on national theatre festivals like Oerol, Over ’t IJ Festival, Spring Performing Arts Festival and Karavaan Festival. We also made a several nationwide theatre tours.

Tesla Theatre is a short musical theatre performance about inventor and eccentric genius Nikola Tesla. In this performance for actor and a musical tesla coil, we share our fascination with wayward inventor, physicist and futurist Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943). Although he was often regarded as a mad genius in his own times, nowadays Tesla is seen as one of the biggest inventors of all times in the fields of electricity and magnetism. In this performance his miracles and radical ideas regarding a global network of unlimited wireless energy come to live.

Muisman Opnemen (2008)

Muisman Opnemen is the newest performance of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which I again composed the soundtrack. Muisman Opnemen is based on the novel ‘The Overcoat’ by Nikolaj Gogol (1809 - 1852) and is about Muisman, a civil servant with a futile function. He nevertheless loves his job and everyday, he arrives happy at the office. One day, he meets the impulsive ‘girl upstairs’. She pursues him to buy a new overcoat. This overcoat will forever change his life.

Maandag of Dinsdag is a new play of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which i composed music and (partly) did light- and stagedesign. It is inspired by ‘The Hours’ (2002), the oscar-winning movie directed by Stephen Daldry. Maandag of Dinsdag is a portrait of Gina, Laura and Clarissa, who all ended up in an emotional vacuum. As a result, their luck becomes nothing more than a façade. Maandag of Dinsdag shows the day on which this façade will be demolished.

(un)aimed

(Un)Aimed is a multichannel, interactive sound installation. It consists of several rotating parabolic speakers. These speakers produce extremely narrow beams of sound that appear very near to the visitor, when standing in such a beam (and almost silent when standing outside of it). Because the speakers turn around and the walls of the room function like ‘acoustic mirrors’, it appears as if there are an innumerable amount of soundsources, thereby creating a strange ‘acoustic image’ of the room.
