Boordevol interessante quotes. Een selectie:

Art is notoriously hard to define, and so are the differences between good art and bad art. But let me offer a generalization: art is something that results from making a lot of choices. […] If an A.I. generates a ten-thousand-word story based on your prompt, it has to fill in for all of the choices that you are not making. There are various ways it can do this. One is to take an average of the choices that other writers have made, as represented by text found on the Internet; that average is equivalent to the least interesting choices possible, which is why A.I.-generated text is often really bland. Another is to instruct the program to engage in style mimicry, emulating the choices made by a specific writer, which produces a highly derivative story. In neither case is it creating interesting art.

Proud of all my students who graduated in the last few weeks! It was the first, sunny day of ‘the ‘Covid19’ lockdown, the Dutch way’. Instead of a total lockdown like China, Italy and now Spain and France, the Netherlands are opting for a controlled spreading of the Corona virus throughout the population.
By taking less stringent measures, society will be less disrupted, but a lot of healthy, less vulnerable people (possibly up to 60% of the population) will get sick with mild symptoms of Corona over the next coming months.
— Lees op arnoldhoogerwerf.micro.blog/2020/03/17/total-lockdown-vs.html

Over mij

Video and sound workshop on ‘Identity’ at Academy of Theatre and Dance Amsterdam

Had a great start of a new video and sound workshop at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam. The script generates a short new poem, loosely based on the Japanese Haiku poetic form. It uses all nouns, verbs and adjectives from the teaching module descriptions of all the fields of study within HKU Media (Audio Visual Media, Image and Media Technology, Animation, Illustration, Graphic Design and Photography). I used cheapbotsdonequick to create the twitterbot part. This twitterbot, together with the Teaching module generator installation, was part of a research project commissioned by the Expertisecentrum Educatie of HKU Utrecht University of the Arts, on the possibilities of language technology within an art curriculum, whether for analytical purposes, or as a toolkit within a creative process. As a creative director / curator, I also initiate (research) projects at the interface between the different art disciplines and the sciences.A continuing theme throughout my work is the human relationship with technological and scientific progress. I’m fascinated by the origins of media technology throughout the ages, and the influence of historical scientific and technological discoveries on contemporary culture. With my projects, I’m trying to make tangible how those historical developments are shaping our current and future perception of the world.

The supernormal - Artist-in-residence / Book Project

The supernormal

Artist-in-residence

Book project

From september 2017 - february 2018, i have been working at NIAS (Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences) as part of a fellowship offered by the KNAW and the Akademie van Kunsten. For those interested i will share here a little bit of the technical backgrounds of this system.

Hardware The system consists of a firewire camera (from UniBrain), with a wide-angle lens (Marshall Electronics), an omnidirectional infra-red illuminator (homemade, for very dark lighting conditions) connected via an 11 mtr. long firewire cable (also from UniBrain) to a computer. This computer is running a softwarepatch (written in the Max/Jitter programming environment). I usually place the camera directly above the scene being tracked, so that the barrel distortion of the wide angle lens isn’t too annoying. It can track and report up to 8 different positions simultaneously (thanks to the excellent external object for Jitter written by Randy Jones: 2up.jit.centroids). These coordinates can then be used for triggering all sorts of actions in Max. In the case of the original project it triggered a matrix of 64 lights and the spatialization of sound in a quadraphonic speaker setup.

(Announcement) Cowboy Bij Nacht @ Uitfeest Utrecht 2007

Cowboy Bij Nacht will present short excerpts from two upcoming theatre shows at Uitfeest 2007, marking the beginning of the cultural season. It is based on the documentary film Checkpoint of Yoav Shamir, concerning the social intercourse between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian citizens at checkpoints around the Palestinian areas. For this play, I composed a multichannel soundtrack.

In Atkritka, the tensed situation around the checkpoints is stripped of almost all visual context in six succesive scenes. As a contrast, I tried to ‘fill in’ this stripped context with a ‘hyperrealistic’ soundscape. Sounds were treated as objects; several small speakers on the stage played back concrete sounds of birds, insects, cars, etc., within a surrounding soundscape of 4 bigger speakers around the stage, each scene resembling a different desolate atmosphere.

Scenes From My Backyard (2006)

Scenes From my Backyard is a 4-channel video installation in cooperation with Alexander de Vree and Mariska Hogendoorn. It is a ‘panoramic tableau vivant’ in which moving panoramic images are extended over 4 adjacent projection-screens. In a 15 minutes long time lapse sequence, the spectator is taken along different ’everyday scenes’ of a family in their backyard.

In this project, an estranged atmosphere is created out of everyday situations, by creating artificial camera-movements and playing the material back and forth at differents speeds during editing. The extremely wideangle images for this projects are shot at regular intervals of 1-2 seconds through a special 360-degrees panoramic lens. (This same technique is being used before in 24H Panorama)

24H Panorama (2006)

24H Panorama (4 min. / SD Video / Sound) is a short animated film of panoramic still images. In this film, time and space seem to exist independently in a sequence of tranquil landscapes. It is the first project in what will become a series of short films that deal with manipulated perception of time and space.

The extremely wideangle images for this projects are shot at regular intervals of 1-2 seconds through a special 360-degrees panoramic lens. All camera-movement is artificial, and digitally added during editing, independent of speed and direction of the material itself, creating an ‘illusionary flow of time and movement’. In the case of this project, the result is a somewhat rough collection of experiments. This project functions more or less as a pilot for further research.

Brel 2 (2005)

Brel 2 is a musical theatre play of Toneelgroep Oostpool, directed by Rob Ligthert. The room is totally darkened when the visitor enters. By walking in between the lights, the visitor triggers the lights and influences the behaviour of the installation; the room becomes ‘filled’ with fluid-like waves of light and sound.

Inspiration for this project comes from the different concepts of ‘seeing’ that are developed throughout history. In antiquity, seeing is a humane activity, a movement of the eye towards the world. The eye was a candle that transmitted a ‘soft radiating light’, that lighted the world. In the 17th century, Descartes and others made the eye an inhuman, physical ‘instrument’, a sensor for light, independent of what it perceived. This idea is still very influential in modern science. In recent philosophy these separate views are being criticized however, and more comprehensive and nuanced ideas are developed that try to form a symbiosis of the observer and what is being observed.

Een Samenzwering Der Idioten (2003)

Een Samenzwering Der Idioten is a play by De Theatercompagnie, directed by Theu Boermans.
