Graduation of first class of students Ad Design Digital Media

I just finished the first part of the examination assessment of the first group of students from the new Associate Degree Design Digital Media (HKU - Utrecht University of The Arts). I’m very proud of all our students: their hard work has certainly paid off, especially in these difficult times!

Video and sound workshop on ‘Identity’ at Academy of Theatre and Dance Amsterdam

Had a great start of a new video and sound workshop at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam. We had a brief discussion on the fine art of mass manipulation, and on the uncanny similarities between this fake news fragment from a few days ago and the famous ‘Lambeth Walk’ parody of Nazi propaganda during the Second World War.

Shell Shock sound installation at Eye Amsterdam

I made a commissioned sound installation for the Shell Shock programme in Eye Filmmuseum! You’re welcome to experience it until 22 May 2019. It’s free, since the installation is at the entrance of Eye, but I highly encourage you to also visit one of the great talks, films and other events as part of Shell Shock, or the parallel exhibition A Tale of Hidden Histories.

Moving Image Course at HKU

This week I started a new Moving Image course at the HKU Brede Basisopleiding (University of the Arts Utrecht). Here you can see the students creating a Light Modulator. It’s so nice to see young students getting enthusiastic by an art excercise developed almost 80 years ago at Moholy-Nagy’s New Bauhaus.

Masterclass with Alvin Lucier

On Sunday, october 19th 2014, i was given the opportunity to attend a masterclass by Alvin Lucier at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. This very inspiring masterclass was part of the Alvin Lucier Festival and was organized by Sonic Acts. Mr. Lucier talked extensively about his work and we attended several of his compositions being performed across the museum. Several of my own projects were inspired by the ideas and work of Alvin Lucier.

Lecture on Niko Tinbergen during 'De Academie' (De NUTtige winkel)

On january 15, Alexander de Vree and i presented a lecture on Niko Tinbergen, his research on supernormal stimuli and human behaviour during De NUTtige winkel (an annual series of performances by Nieuw Utrechts Toneel) in Theater Kikker. The lecture was based on our research for De Meeuwen van Tinbergen and focused on the implications of research in behavioural biology in relation to economics and the economic crisis. A small part of the lecture also focused on his brother (and fellow Nobel Prize winner), the famous economist Jan Tinbergen.

I created a video teaser for my upcoming project ‘De Meeuwen van Tinbergen’, about the life and work of Nobel Prize laureate Niko Tinbergen (1907-1988).

‘De Meeuwen van Tinbergen’ will be an interdisciplinary project in cooperation with Cowboy bij Nacht, Staatsbosbeheer, Museum Boerhaave Leiden, Institute of Biology (Leiden University) and Oerol Festival Terschelling. [Announcement] First public presentation of 'De Meeuwen van Tinbergen' at Uitfeest Utrecht 2010

On september 12, a first public presentation will be held of my upcoming project ‘De Meeuwen van Tinbergen’ during Uitfeest Utrecht 2010, the start of the cultural season in Utrecht.

Once every hour, on the city hall square, Cowboy by Nacht will present a ‘concert for seagulls’, presented through an 8-channel surround sound installation, placed around the square. In between these short interventions (inspired by Hitchcock’s “The Birds”), we will invite the audience to take part in a little video-interview, while they get a special treatment by a make-up artist.

Nomination for BNG WorkSpace Project Prize 2010

I got nominated for the BNG WorkSpace Project Prize 2010, organized by Filmhuis Den Haag / ZAAL5, with a project proposal for an interactive light installation named ‘A Close Encounter of The First Kind’ (for which i’m still seeking funding).

WORKSPACE is the annual project competition through which ZAAL5 seeks out talented filmmakers and artists working with film, new (interactive) media, video installations, performance and visuals. ZAAL5 is the in-house project space for media arts at Filmhuis Den Haag. This multifunctional room is dedicated to programmes and projects using moving images that are not displayed in regular film halls.

My short film 24H Panorama will be screened at the International Environmental Short Film Festival, taking place from june 5-10 2008 in Istanbul (Turkey). My film is scheduled on the 8th of june at 20.30 hrs. Other selected dutch films (from Peter Delpeut, Erik Urlings, Frank van den Engel and Froda Kuipers) will be screened as well on this festival.

Cimatics Masterclass Live A/V, Brussels (2007/2008)

This week I am attending the fourth and last week of the Cimatics Masterclass Live A/V 2007/2008 in Brussels. Cimatics is a Brussels based international platform for Live A/V. This Masterclass consists of a series of 4 workshops with lectures from different internationally renowned media artists / theorists (amongst others Marc Amerika, Lab[au], Yves de Mey, Jerry Galle, Brendan Byrne & Ana Carvalho, Boris Debackere). The practical part is all about collaboration: 10 selected artists, working in different fields of media-art (and with backgrounds ranging from choreography to architecture) form groups and collaborate with each other, with the aim of creating an audiovisual performance project.

From february 15th - february 19th 2008, i will present a new video from my ‘Time Sketch’ series at exhibition Narratives in Space // Spatial Narrations in Ghent (BE). This installation exhibition is organised by Ghent based foundation Existentie, a platform that brings together artists, arts critics and curators. The past couple of months, i’ve been involved in ‘Labo 5’, a series of meetings, lectures and presentations organised by Existentie, aimed at bridging the gap between art theorists and art practitioners. This ‘Narratives…’ installation exhibition is one of the results of this Labo. A Video-based Motion Tracking System

On october 2nd 2007, a modified version of the motion tracking system i originally developed for my Lightroom project, will be used in an interactive sound-installation of Werner Urban at the Kinderboekenbal 2007 at Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam. For those interested i will share here a little bit of the technical backgrounds of this system.

Hardware The system consists of a firewire camera (from UniBrain), with a wide-angle lens (Marshall Electronics), an omnidirectional infra-red illuminator (homemade, for very dark lighting conditions) connected via an 11 mtr. long firewire cable (also from UniBrain) to a computer. This computer is running a softwarepatch (written in the Max/Jitter programming environment). I usually place the camera directly above the scene being tracked, so that the barrel distortion of the wide angle lens isn’t too annoying. It can track and report up to 8 different positions simultaneously (thanks to the excellent external object for Jitter written by Randy Jones: 2up.jit.centroids). These coordinates can then be used for triggering all sorts of actions in Max. In the case of the original project it triggered a matrix of 64 lights and the spatialization of sound in a quadraphonic speaker setup.

Cowboy Bij Nacht will present short excerpts from two upcoming theatre shows at Uitfeest 2007, marking the beginning of the cultural season. At Huis a.d. Werf, ‘Maandag of Dinsdag’ will be playing at 13.30 and 14.30 (Premiere will be october 25 2007 at Huis aan de Werf). At the Ganzenmarkt (Stadhuisplein), on every whole hour, there will be a short excerpt titled ‘Ondergetekende’. The premiere of this new performance is scheduled somewhere in spring 2008. I will make music for both pieces.
