Proud of all my students who graduated in the last few weeks! And happy to be the owner of this beautiful and limited edition book by one of them (a side project of a bigger project including a short documentary on bicultural identity).
Arnold Hoogerwerf
I’m a media artist, teacher, curator and researcher, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Feel free to browse my projects, read some of my latest thoughts, or get in touch.
Read below for what I’m working on now.
This is what I’m working on and researching at the moment:
Scheduled for 2027 is a new sound art project on city bells and the meaning of sound in pre-industrial societies, in cooperation with the Nationaal Museum Klok & Peel. I’m currently drafting a project proposal for an interactive installation as part of a larger exhibition. A few books that have been especially inspiring:
- Village Bells: The Culture of the Senses in the Nineteenth-Century French Countryside — Alain Corbin
- A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century — Barbara W. Tuchman
- Het verborgen raderwerk. Over tijd, machines en bewustzijn — Douwe Draaisma
Also for 2027, I’m developing a new immersive installation for the Avenue of Arts in Utrecht that bridges art and ecology. This site-specific project uses bio-acoustic elements to make biodiversity tangible, creating a temporary monument where social cohesion and environmental awareness meet.
Scheduled for 2028 is a curatorial project on acoustic ecology and sound art, which I am currently researching in depth. This is also still in the proposal phase.
Although currently on hiatus, I continue to pursue research for my book project The Supernormal (launch date TBD), which explores “the art instinct” and how knowledge in this area might influence the future of art and art education. Recently, these books stood out the most:
- The Age of Insight — Eric R. Kandel
- The Seductions of Darwin: Art, Evolution, Neuroscience — Matthew Rampley
And finally, I’m still enjoying teaching several courses in my part-time role at Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU).
